BRIGHTON, Mich.– The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team played two early afternoon games today. The Pomeroys split as they run ruled Kent State University - at Tuscarawas 10-0 and lost a late lead to Cleary University to fall 8-3.
GAME ONE | VS. KENT STATE UNIVERSITY – AT TUSCARAWAS | WON 10-0 (FIVE INNINGS)
SMWC defeated Kent State University - Tuscarawas 10-0 in game one as two pitchers teamed up to throw a no-hitter. The Pomeroys secured their victory thanks to six runs in the third inning when Mariah Stout, Paige McClain, Kindra Gingerich, Baylee Waters, and Kerri Schrock each drove in runs during the inning. Taylor Andrew earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for the team. She surrendered zero runs, zero hits over four innings, and struck out five batters. Kelsey Young threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. SMWC racked up seven hits in the game. Hollie Jones, McClain, and Waters each had multiple hits to lead the Pomeroys.
GAME TWO | VS. CLEARY UNIVERSITY | LOST 8-3
SMWC lost the lead late in an 8-3 defeat to Clary University in today's final game. The game was tied at three with the Cougars batting in the bottom of the sixth when Megan Robinette homered on the first pitch of the at-bat which scored three runs. Christian Chambers started the game for the Pomeroys. She surrendered two runs on two hits over five innings and striking out one. Taylor Andrew threw one inning in relief. Cleary University launched two home runs on the day. Overall, SMWC scattered seven hits in the game. Nicole Niespodziany and Hollie Jones each racked up multiple hits. Niespodziany went 3-for-3 at the plate which led both teams.
The Woods softball will square off against both Cleary and Kent State- Tuscarawas tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to conclude the invitational.
