SMWC Claims Spot in the USCAA National Championship Game vs. Cleary

 

DUBOIS, Pa.  The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team faced #1 Cleary University and #3 Carlow University today. In game one, the Pomeroys lost to the #1 seeded Cougars 2-0 which knocked them into the loser's bracket. After which, SMWC dominated the #3 seeded Celtics 7-0 to advance back to the winner's bracket and into the USCAA Small College Softball World Series National Championship game vs. Cleary University. This marks the program's fifth-year in-a-row making it to the National Championship game. Because the Pomeroys suffered one loss, they will be forced to beat the Cougars twice tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. and at 2:00 p.m as the tournament is double-elimination.


GAME ONE | SMWC 0, CLEARY 2

In the USCAA Small College Worlds Series Semi-Final, the Pomeroys and Cougars were scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth inning until the Cougars struck first. Kaitlin Dormire hit a two-run home run which the Pomeroys could not bounce back from in the last inning. Despite pitching a gem, Christian Chambers suffered the loss on the mound. She finished giving up seven hits, two runs and struck out one batter. Overall, the Woods tallied five hits behind an enormously impressive defensive performance. Spectacular plays were made by both Kindra Gingerich and Hollie Jones as they each had diving catches.


GAME TWO | SMWC 7, CARLOW 0

Win or go home, the Pomeroys rose to the occasion behind Taylor Andrew's supreme pitching and an impressive offensive performance. As a team, SMWC combined for seven hits, seven runs scored, and six RBI's. Hollie Jones went 2-for-3, scored two runs, hit a triple and stole a base. Baylee Waters went 2-for-3, scored two runs, and stole two bases. On the mound, Andrew gained the victory! She pitched seven innings, gave up three hits, and struck out three batters. The Pomeroys jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. They maintained them up until the bottom of the sixth when they tacked on five more runs to put the Celtics away. The big inning was led by Jones, Waters, Kerri SchrockKindra Gingerich, and Mariah Stout. Jones, Waters, SchrockGingerich, and Kelsey Young all scored. Stout earned two RBI's, Jones hit a triple, and Schrock singled.


NEXT UP

The SMWC softball team will take on Cleary University tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. EST in the USCAA Small College Softball World Series National Championship. If game two is needed, the Pomeroys will play again 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
