SMWC Basketball Captures First Victory of the 18-19 Campaign

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - Yesterday night, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team earned its first win of the season as they defeated Blackburn College. The Pomeroys notched a 103-99 victory behind a stellar offensive performance as five SMWC players tallied double-digits and season-highs on the night.

How It Happened:

At the end of the first quarter, SMWC trailed the Beavers 23-22. Callan Taylor led the team in scoring with nine first-quarter points as she knocked down three 3-PT baskets. At the half, the Pomeroys were down 54-43. SMWC's offense exploded in the third quarter as they scored 31 points to take a 73-70 lead. Eight separate players combined for the 31 points. The defense stepped up their intensity as they held the BC offense to 17 points and forced 12 turnovers.

From Head Coach Robert Belf

On how the team played and what they did well...

"This was a very positive team win as everyone contributed. We have improved in each contest up to this point, but it was in specific areas of play at specific times. We regrouped at halftime last night and played a very good second half in many areas"

On getting the first win of the season as the SMWC head coach...

"I know everyone wants to know how it feels to get your first win, but for me, it is just the step in the process of our improvement. It is satisfying to see the achievement and excitement among the team. Not for just getting the win, but the realization that they can sustain their pace of play and achieve success as a group. It is always more difficult to gain a college-level road win which also makes this very positive for the growth of the team."

From Callan Taylor

On getting the first win of the season and how the team played as a whole...

"Last nights game was a big win for us, especially with going to Pennsylvania this week. We played hard, we played together, and played with high energy the entire game. It feels great to get that first win of the year and we are all excited to see what we will accomplish this season"

From Delaney Kendall

On how the team was able to notch its first win of the year...

"We are starting to understand what each player can contribute to the team. We played poised and under control the whole game. We let go of our emotions and kept thinking about the next paly. It was a collective team effort considering five players scored in double-digits. This first win shows us what we are capable of, and we are only going up from here"
