Inaugural Indoor Track & Field Meet in the Books; Women Take Second, Men Take Fourth

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) men's and women's indoor track & field programs kicked off their 2019 inaugural season at the Robert H. Johnson "Tell Me Something Good" Open hosted by Wabash College today. The women's team took second place and the men's team grabbed fourth place. Between both programs, SMWC secured eight total first-place event finishes. 

The Woods competed against Wabash College, University of Southern Illinois, Indiana University-East, Fuzion College, Albion College, and the University of Pikeville. 

"It felt good to get the inaugural track meet for SMWC under our belt today," stated head coach Zach Whitkanack.

After the women's second-place finish, Coach Whitkanack was proud of many individual performances, "The women's team had a great day finishing in second place. We had numerous strong performances by Alicia Lombardo, Kaileigh Pruitt, and Claire Gillen." He added, "The distance squad added a lot of points with top performances from Zoe Trausch, Kathryn White, and Kendyll Schulz."

Coach Whitkanack was also proud of his men's team, "On the men's side, we still have room to improve and some areas to fill with recruiting next year. We had some great performances including Montel Gardner in the long jump and 60 M dash. Our distance squad was also well represented by Brennan Guido, Brady Page, and Carlos Devalos."

On the men's team, SMWC's fourth-place and 43-point finish were earned by impressive performances by multiple student-athletes.

Montel Gardner won the men's long jump competition with a 23 feet, 5.1-inch soaring jump; this was nearly three feet further than the next competitor. Gardner also won the 60 M dash with a blazing time of 7.04. With both of the first-place finishes, he scored SMWC a total of 14 points. Brennan Guido won the 1-Mile race with a time of 4:50.88. Guido also won the 3000 M run with a time of 9:30.71. Between both events, he scored 14 total points. Zachary Gundell secured a second-place finish in the 800 M run; Grundell scored 5 points for his team.

The women's 103-point, second-place finish, was an all-around team performance.

Alicia Lombardo won the women's long jump competition with a jump of 16 feet, 10.3 inches; she earned SMWC 7 points. Claire Gillen took second place in the shot put, her furthest throw was 37 feet, 5.2 inches. Gillen secured the Woods 7 points with this performance. Kaileigh Pruitt secured a second-place finish in the high jump with a 4 feet, 11-inch leap. Pruitt grabbed 7 points for her team. Zoe Trausch won the 1-Mile race with a time of 5:37.87; she gave SMWC 7 points with the win. Emma Fey finished in third place during the 300 M dash; Fey secured 6 points for the Pomeroys. Kathryn White finished first place in the 800 M run; White score 9 points for the Woods. Kendyll Schulz won the 3000 M run with a time of 11:36.57; Schulz earned 9 points for SMWC.
