Pomeroys Fall Short in Comeback; Harris Stowe State Wins in Double-Overtime

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The #6 ranked Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (SMWC) men's soccer team (9-4) hosted the Hornets of Harris Stowe State University (4-8) this afternoon, with its double-overtime loss, the Pomeroys have now lost four contests. SMWC fell to the Hornets 4-3 in what was almost a come from behind win. With just three contests remaining in the 2019 season, SMWC is a top contender to receive a USCAA Nationals bid for a chance to play for a National Championship in Virginia Beach.


The Highlights

  • Harris Stowe State recorded the first goal of the contest in the 11th minute; Justin Donovan displayed a nice offensive move to open up the net for a goal (unassisted)
  • Marcos Silva tallied the Hornets second goal in the 16th minute to extend the Harris Stowe lead 2-0
  • Off a beautiful pass by Omar Abdallah Nabilsi, Luis Botello got the Pomeroys on the scoreboard with a goal in the 24th minute
  • In the 48th minute, Donovan notched his second goal of the contest on an assist by Hugo Tarrida
  • Nabilsi was fouled in the box in the 75th minute which earned him a PK opportunity; he netted his 16th goal of the season
  • After Evan Crowe was taken out in the goalie box, SMWC was awarded another PK; Nabilsi was called upon and he scored his second goal of the contest 
  • Tied 3-3, SMWC and HSSU needed overtime to determine the winner
  • Unlucky in the first overtime, neither team could score thus double overtime was forced
  • In the second overtime, Donovan scored the golden goal to give the Hornets a 4-3 win

By the Numbers

  • The Pomeroys had two yellow cards to the Hornets three
  • Keaton Krischak had three saves in the 106:25 at goalie
  • The Woods edged HSSU in shots 18-15, and shots on goal 12-7
  • Nabilsi scored two goals which add to his total of 17 on the season, he also tallied his sixth assist of the season

Next Up

The Woods will be back in action on Sunday, October 13th, as they travel to Berrien Springs, Michigan. SMWC will face Andrews University, earlier this season the Pomeroys defeated the Cardinals 3-0.
