Men's Soccer Close, But No Upset in 3-2 Loss Against Bryant & Stratton

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) men's soccer team fell to Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse this afternoon in their historic first-ever USCAA National Championship match. The men looked outmatched by Bryant & Stratton throughout much of the match but were rescued partly by a couple of late goals off the foot of Edson Alvarado that drastically helped their goal differential going into tomorrow's match.

How It Happened

First Half: The Pomeroys appeared outmatched early as they allowed some shots from Bryant & Stratton that shouldn't have been allowed. Perhaps it can be chalked up to their inexperience at Nationals, but the men still played hard and matched the intensity level of their opponent. It wasn't until the 25' that Bryant & Stratton scored the opening goal of a simple miscue but the Pomeroys didn't let it affect their drive. The Woods allowed a second goal in 31' after a communication error that led to a foul and a free-kick. They would head into the half down 2-0.

Second Half: The Pomeroys regrouped and the much-needed break allowed the guys to take a break and evaluate some injuries. They would improve their defense throughout the 2nd half but still couldn't get any offensive plays to materialize. Bryant & Stratton would stick the dagger in SMWC when their goal in the 76' appeared to put the match away for good, but this men's team just doesn't quit. Back-to-back goals in the 84th and 90th minutes by Edson Alvarado injected some life as they searched to equalize in the closing seconds. They would have to settle for a 3-2 loss, however, but the late goals drastically helped their goal differential as they head into tomorrow's match.

What's Next?

The men's team faces Paul Quinn College tomorrow, November 9th, at 12:15 p.m. ET.
