SMWC Softball Secures #5 Seed in USCAA Small College World Series

NORFOLK, Va. – This evening the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) announced its 2019 USCAA Small College World Series contenders. The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team has earned a No. 5 seed bid into the 2019 USCAA Small College World Series hosted by the city of DuBois, Pennsylvania. This notches the 18th USCAA post-season appearance by The Woods softball program (most by any USCAA institution).

2019 Regular-Season | Recap

The Pomeroys concluded its regular season with a 19-9 (.679) record as they won all seven of its final contests outscoring their opponents 44-to-11. SMWC earned 10 NAIA victories and four NCAA Division-II wins throughout the spring. What he is most excited for on the bid to Nationals…

"It's a great opportunity to finish the year off in a tournament that features the Top 10 teams in the division. I'm most excited about the opportunity for the girls to get to show the country what kind of talent they have and their passion for the game."

What he believes it means to their team…

"I think it's a journey for the seniors to win their third national title and I think it's a great opportunity for the freshman to be able to experience this and be with such an experienced group of girls."

Quote | Assistant Coach Josh Wood

What he expects to see from their team in Du Bois…

"I expect more of the same from us… we get faster, we get stronger and we get more solid on defense every game we play and I expect nothing more than that in the weeks to come.  We still have room to improve and when a team like ours is continuing to improve every day you won't want to look away because you will miss something special."

What he is most excited for on the bid to Nationals…

"It is an absolute pleasure to have the best seat in the house to watch these women play softball daily, but what excites me most about this team is not what they do on the field, it is the potential that each one of their future holds.  After softball, these women's passion to be the best will spill over into their professional fields and I imagine businesses will thrive by having any member of the 2018-19 Pomeroys Softball team as an employee."

Quote | #1 Kelsey Young

"Our whole team is so excited for this opportunity to play for another national championship. We have overcome a lot of adversity and grown so much together this year and we are really coming together and playing well at the right time. We're ready to compete at a high level and show everyone what we can bring to the table. I'm most excited for the opportunity to win a national championship here and to represent my school with pride. Also really excited to play with some of my best friends and teammates for the last time!"

Quote | #3 Nicole Niespodziany

"It's amazing to make it to Nationals for another year. Our team has come a long way since the beginning of the season. With that being said, I think we have the mentality, drive and perseverance to be successful at Nationals. Ultimately, we want to accomplish winning Nationals. However, what's more important is that we play to the best of our ability and give it our all. If we do that, we will not be able to hang our heads about the outcome. Additionally, I hope the entire trip will be fun but focused. It's essential to enjoy the game, stay positive, and dial in our focus, to play as a team. It's not all about the business, but we're there to get the job done while enjoying the game we love."

Quote | #4 Hollie Jones

"Being able to have the chance to go to Nationals, especially our seniors last year, is rewarding and so exciting. I hope we continue to build team chemistry, grow as individuals, and enjoy the sport we love. Nationals is another chance to prove the talent we have on the team. The trip should primarily be all business but we should all know when to be serious or when to relax and enjoy the trip. We didn't work this hard all season to go there and be mediocre. Let's leave it all on the field. We are there to play softball, win games, and enjoy playing some competitive softball."

Quote | #7 Katelynn Kennedy

"Going back to Nationals this year feels good. This season has flown by and to have the opportunity to expand it one more week is great. Of course, our main goal is to bring the National Championship back to the Woods. I'm always an advocate for having fun but getting it done, so I'm hoping that this week we can have a lot of fun but also win some games!"
