SMWC Hires Jennifer Cassell as Softball Head Coach

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – Jennifer Cassell has been named head softball coach at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), athletic director Deanna Bradley announced today.

Cassell will begin immediately as the leader of the 13x the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship Pomeroys softball program. She brings a passion for the game along with experience in collegiate, travel, and high school level atmospheres.

Athletic director Deanna Bradley said, "We are excited to have Jennifer as our new head softball coach. Jennifer brings great experience, knowledge and a high level of encouraging energy to SMWC. We look forward to her positive influence and ability to take the team to new holistic accomplishments on and off the field."

Cassell steps in on the heels of the Pomeroys' fourth USCAA National Championship in five years (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019) and is excited to lead the winningest program at SMWC. "I look forward to getting back to the college level and becoming part of such a great program. The rich history of the school and student-athlete first approach is what drew me to this position." She added, "I am grateful to be a part of such a wonderful school, department and program."

She joins the department after serving as the head coach at Washington Township High School (Valparaiso, Ind.). She led the Senators to a 14-8 record and a second consecutive trip to the IHSAA Sectional Championship game.

Prior to WTHS, she was the head softball coach at Ancilla College.

Cassel served as the head coach at Purdue University-North Central. She was promoted from assistant coach in 2016 to lead the program. She helped the Panther softball team earn the 2016 Champions of Character award (an NAIA initiative for community service).

In her time at PNC, she was also an infield coach. Cassell led a team which finished with a .950 fielding percentage. While she coached two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) All-Conference players and three NAIA Academic All-Americans.

Between coaching stints at PNC, Cassell worked as an Ironworker for the Ironworkers Union Local 395. 

She earned her B.S in Liberal Studies from Purdue University-North Central in 2007 and an A.S from Ivy Tech Community College in Applied Sciences in 2011. She was a student-athlete at Los Angeles Pierce Community College before transferring to PUNC to finish out her playing career.

Currently, she resides in LaPorte, Indiana, with her husband Doug, and their two daughters, Emily (13) and Brooklyn (6).
