Softball Opens Season with Losses to Huntington, Lindsey Wilson

COLUMBIA, Ky. The SMWC softball team (0-2) faced stiff competition this afternoon against both Huntington University (2-1) and Lindsey Wilson College (10-1). With their games against Brescia canceled due to weather the previous day, there was plenty of rust to shake off as they fell to Huntington and Lindsey Wilson 10-4 and 10-0, respectively.

Game #01 | vs. Huntington University | L 10-4

The Pomeroys struggled to make it out of the first inning as they worked out their opening day jitters. A few errors allowed Huntington to take a 3-0 lead, but it wasn't until the 2nd inning when Huntington would go up 8-0 on a 3-run homerun by Sophia Beachy and a 2-run homer by Kiera Stacy later in the inning. Brooke Coffing would take over pitching duties in the third and allow just two runs through five innings.

Game #02 | vs. Lindsey Wilson College | L 0-10

The Woods continued to struggle early in the game as they were tagged for 3 runs and 2 errors in the first inning but started to settle down before. It wasn't until the 3rd inning when pitcher Brooke Coffing was rocked for 7 runs off a 3-run homer and a grand slam by Lindsey Wilson's Makea-Al Kaluau. The Pomeroys would be run-ruled and surrender this one in the 5th inning.

At the Plate | Player of the Game

The Game #01 "Player of the Game" was: Mallory Clarkson, who went 2-3 with a run and 3 RBIs including a solo home run in the 7th inning. Brooke Coffing provided five innings of 2-run relief while going 2-2 at the plate and scoring a run.

The Game #02 "Player of the Game" was: Camryn Scott, who went 2-3 at the plate and helped to lock down the gap at shortstop throughout the game.

On what she thinks she did well today hitting leadoff…

"As a leadoff batter, I just tell myself that it's my job to get on base so the people behind me can run and I try not to try too hard or hit it over the fence. I just try to get on base so they can do their job."

Who's On Deck?

The Pomeroys will host Oakland City University for their home opener on Tuesday, March 3. First pitch is scheduled to at 3:00 p.m. ET.
