Softball Takes Down MUW 9-6 Behind Huge 6th Inning

DUBOIS, Pa. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (SMWC) softball team (2-0) secured the win against Mississippi University for Women (0-1) 9-6 on Tuesday night to stay undefeated behind a 5-run 6th inning.

Head Coach Jim Walker commented, "The team brought great emotion again today and we played a much better game defensively. Our baserunning causes teams a lot of problems because we are pretty aggressive and that is really what triggered our big innings." Coach Walker knows that the team is led by upperclassmen as well as younger players, "We are getting great leadership from our upperclassmen and we had three freshmen step up huge today."

The team will play game three tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET against #1 Florida National University.

Postseason Game #2 | vs Mississippi University for Women | W 9-6

SMWC started strong with a single by Katrina Strow and another from Josie Lord to score the first run. Lord would steal 2nd base and advance to third to a passed ball before scoring on a wild pitch. The Owls added one in the bottom of the 1st on a groundout to make it 1-2. The Pomeroys would cool off and go down 1-2-3 in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings while MUW would tie the game on a single in the 3rd.

The Owls took the lead on a groundout in the 5th inning but SMWC would respond in a huge way by scoring five runs in the top of the 6th. Jaselyn Conn started things off with a triple to left-center field and Strow would drive her in with a single up the middle to tie it. Camryn Scott reached on an error and Josie Lord's ground out to score Strow would give them a 4-3 lead. A bunt single by Brooke Coffing, a SAC fly by Kelsey Young, and some heads-up baserunning by Jilliann Reese would give the team a solid 7-3 lead.

Mississippi University made things interesting in the bottom of the 6th by scoring on a triple, a SAC fly, and then a solo home run to left field to make it 6-7. Coffing, the hero from last night, and Reese would both single in the top of the 7th to tack on two more runs and Summer Rocha would save the game by stranding two. The Pomeroys win this nail biter 9-6 and advance.

Pomeroy Player-of-the-Game: Katrina Strow went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI, 3 runs, and two stolen bases. Her single in the 6th to tie the game started the big inning and her stolen base in the 7th set her up to score and give the Pomeroys some insurance.

Quote | #2 Katrina Strow

On her big day offensively...

"I started the game off right with a hit and then a run at the beginning. The team really came together with some big hits and defensive plays in the game and that really built our momentum. We're on a business trip so we're ready to take on day three."
