Pomeroys Fall Just Short in 4-5 Loss to FNU

DUBOIS, Pa. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (SMWC) softball team (2-1) suffered their first loss of the postseason this afternoon against Florida National University (3-0). The Pomeroys kept fighting through adversity throughout the game and battled through some unfortunate calls in the 4-5 loss.

With their first loss, the team will play game four this evening at 7:00 p.m. ET against the winner of D'Youville College and Penn State DuBois.


Postseason Game #3 | vs Florida National University | L 4-5

The Conquistadors started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st with a leadoff single and the runner advancing to third on an error. Another couple more singles in the inning would add two runs and Florida National would take an early 2-0 lead. SMWC bats would go cold for a while and FNU added a run on a sacrifice bunt in the 2nd to build on their lead. A triple in the bottom of the 4th would make it 4-0 and start to light a fire under the Pomeroys.

Kaelee Moody would reach on a bunt single to the pitcher but would be thrown out stealing 2nd. Jaselyn Conn's single followed by Katrina Strow's single would get a runner into scoring position. Camryn Scott would load the bases for Josie Lord with a single to the left side. Lord fought at the plate and hit pay dirt with a single up the middle and advancing to third to clear the bases and get SMWC within one. Lord was able to hold them in the bottom of the 5th with no damage and the Pomeroys would get the first two runners on base in the top of the 6th before striking out on the next three batters.

Florida National scored some insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th of a sacrifice fly and SMWC would get the opportunity to take the lead in the 7th. Scott flew out to right, but Lord again singled before pinch-runner Shailyn Day advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Brooke Coffing would draw the walk to put runners at the corner and Jilliann Reese's SAC fly to score Day would put them within one. Faith Pokryfke singled up the middle but Kelsey Young's shot into right field would be caught on a diving play to end the game. SMWC falls 4-5 in this one.

Following their loss, the Pomeroys will face the winner of D'Youville and Penn State DuBois in the losers bracket tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET.
