Pomeroys Edge D’Youville 5-4 to Advance to Championship

DUBOIS, Pa. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (SMWC) softball team (3-1) defeated D'Youville College (2-2) 4-5 on a walk-off single by Kelsey Young to advance to their 5th USCAA National Championship game in six years.

The Pomeroys are scheduled to face Florida National University (3-0) at 1:00 p.m. ET tomorrow. The team will need to defeat the Conquistadors twice tomorrow to secure their 13th USCAA National Title.

Postseason Game #4 | vs D'Youville College | W 4-5

D'Youville started the scoring on a groundout in the 1st inning to score one and would add another in the 3rd on a single up the middle. Center fielder Kaelee Moody would throw out a runner on the play at home to save a run but the Pomeroys still trail 2-0. Jaselyn Conn would triple in the bottom of the 3rd and Camryn Scott would bring her in on a triple of her own later to make it 2-1.

Starter Summer Rocha would make it a quick 4th and SMWC would score 3 in the bottom of the 4th on a single by Moody to score Faith Pokryfke and later a pinch-hit single by Lyric Krause to score two, making it 2-4 for SMWC. Neither team would do much in the 5th or the 6th but a bit of drama unfolded in the bottom of the 6th when a single by Jilliann Reese to right-center would drive Conn around to third who would be initially called out on the tag at third before being overturned on an obstruction call. SMWC couldn't do any damage but hold on to the lead going into the 7th.

D'Youville would lead off with a double followed by an error to make it first and third with nobody out. A sacrifice fly would score one and a groundout would tie the game at 4-4. Rocha escapes the inning with no further damage but the Pomeroys couldn't end the game in the 7th.

Rocha would make two phenomenal plays on line drives back to the mound to get the first two outs and a fielder's choice would send us to the bottom of the 8th. Pokryfke would be placed on 2nd per international rules and her steal of third would give Kelsey Young the chance to be the hero which she would take full advantage of by singling up the middle and securing a spot in the championship game with a 5-4 win.

Pomeroy Player-of-the-Game: Kelsey Young, who not only went 3-4 at the plate with a run scored, but her walk-off single to score Pokryfke sealed the victory for SMWC.

Quote | #1 Kelsey Young

On the game plan in the 8th inning...

"The game plan was to actually bunt Faith [Pokryfke] over, but I failed to get that down so Coach told Faith to steal, she got over there safely and after that, I was just trying to do anything that I could to get a hit and get my team the win."

On the team's mentality facing FNU tomorrow…

"We're hungry and this is the biggest game that we've had all year; we got to take two. I mean they're a good team, but I know that we're better. This is a business trip like Katrina said yesterday. We're here to get stuff done and I think that we come out ready to play tomorrow, everyone is going to be well-rested. We're going to take two and we're going to bring home the title. We're ready!"

Pitching Line:

Summer Rocha (W, 2-0) | 8.0 IP, 12 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO | 2.76 ERA
