SMWC Completes Stellar Season as 2021 USCAA World Series Runner-Up

DUBOIS, Pa. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (SMWC) softball team (3-2) fell to Florida National University (4-0) this afternoon 0-5 to finish their strong season as USCAA Small College World Series Runners Up.

The Pomeroys played a clean game and made some impressive plays in the field but couldn't get runs going against a strong Florida National team.

Postseason Game #5 | vs Florida National University | L 0-5

Jaselyn Conn led off the game with a single up the middle to get things started but would be caught stealing at 2nd after Katrina Strow's strikeout. Camryn Scott would fly out to end the inning. Florida National singled, stole 2nd, and later advanced the runner the third on a wild pitch to get themselves in scoring position. A sacrifice fly would score their first run but starter Summer Rocha would hold them there.

The Pomeroys made some solid contact but just couldn't find the gaps as their shots seemed to gravitate right to the fielder. The Conquistadors would add another run on a triple to center to make it 2-0. Camryn Scott would triple to right-center in the 4th inning with one out, but a rocket lineout by Josie Lord followed by a strikeout would end the inning there for SMWC. FNU would score three more in the bottom of the 5th on a leadoff single followed by a double and a single down the left side to score two. Center fielder Kaelee Moody would make a fantastic diving play to get the next batter, but Florida would somehow score the runner from 2nd on a controversial play. With those three runs, Florida National would take a 5-0 lead.

The Pomeroys would continue to fight at the plate but couldn't find any success as Florida National made plays in the field. The score would stand and the Pomeroys would be named the 2021 USCAA Small College World Series National Champion Runner-Up.

Quote | Head Coach Jim Walker

On how proud he is of the team...

"I am so proud of this team. There was never a game that these amazing young ladies didn't lay everything on the line for each other. Any time you come in as a new coach, you aren't sure how the team will respond but this team did everything I asked of them and worked their tails off every day...I am so proud of this team and would go to battle with them any day of the week."

On the graduating seniors and looking towards next season...

"We are losing some great senior leadership with Brooke [Coffing], Kelsey [Young], and Aril [Spivey] but those three ladies showed the returners what it takes to be a champion not only on the field but off. The future of our program is in great shape. We played 16 players this weekend at the World Series and 13 of them are returning next year with Camryn Scott, Summer Rocha, Jaselyn Conn, and Josie Lord being returning USCAA All-Americans."
