BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (SMWC) women's basketball team defeated Andrews University last night 87-81 to break a 6-game losing streak and move to 2-10 on the season. In a season marked by squandered leads, the Pomeroys lost the lead a couple of times throughout the game but were able to regroup and make the comeback. The Pomeroys were led in scoring by Delaney Kendall with 16 points and closely followed by Kalyn Williams (13) and Pateyn Hayes (11). Williams also added 3 assists and 3 steals to her stat line, and Jayla Rogers led the team in rebounds with 7.
How it Happened
- First Quarter: The Pomeroys jumped out to an early 6-2 lead thanks to a few fouls from Andrews, but both offenses would go quiet soon after. The Woods would go back-and-forth but hold on to a slight lead at 20-19 to close the first quarter.
- Second Quarter: Andrews came out firing to start the second quarter and would take a 35-26 lead. It would appear that SMWC would be on their way to another loss as they couldn't get anything to go and Andrews was taking control in the paint. The Pomeroys would fight back on some huge 3-pointers from Mara Canada and Natalie Nickless to trail just 41-42 at the half.
- Third Quarter: Both teams would battle back-and-forth with SMWC making some clutch 3's and taking advantage of fouls by Andrews to keep things close. A big 3 by Delaney Kendall at the end of the quarter would give SMWC the lead 61-59.
- Fourth Quarter: SMWC seemed determined not to let this one slip away as they fought their way to an 11-point lead to start the quarter. Andrews would go on an 8-3 run to bring things closer and the Woods never felt comfortable no matter the lead. The win became apparent as SMWC was able to make just enough free throws to hold on and win their second game of the season 87-81.
The Pomeroys will face the University of Cincinnati – Clermont this next Sunday, December 15th. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
